OCCUPATIONAL SHAVING MUG OF CAPTAIN GEORGE WILLIAMSON OF THE STEAMER PRISCILLA

porcelain with black monochrome wrap and gilt lettering reading Capt. Geo. H. Williamson, Steamer Priscilla, Fall River Line, 1905. Marked T & V Limoges, France. Documentation accompanying the mug gives brief biographical information on Williamson and also some historical images and information on the steamer Priscilla. Also included with the mug is a framed color chromolithograph of the Priscilla, with a description below the print.
The Fall River Line carried passengers and cargo between Fall River, MA and New York. The Priscilla, a side-wheel steamer, was the largest: "With an overall length of 440 feet, she was the largest sidewheeler in the world when she was launched in 1894." She was also a favorite with passengers because of her stately appointments, gourmet food and entertainment. In 1937 the Priscilla made her last trip, the Fall River Line finally succumbing to the Depression, labor strikes and a changing transportation milieu, as personal automobiles cut into public transportation.
