BERDAN SHARP-SHOOTERS SHARPS NEW MODEL 1859 MILITARY RIFLE. SN 57296. Cal. 52. 30" rnd bbl. This is at the very end of the Sharps rifles attributed to Berdan s Sharpshooters at the beginning of the Civil War. "AWM" cartouche is faintly visible on the left side of the stock. Other is visible but not readable. CONDITION: Blue/brown patina overall with scattered light pitting. Stock is cracked at the rear of the lockplate. STARR PERCUSSION CARBINE. 20" bbl marked "STARR ARMS, YONKERS, NY". Breech marked "STARRS PATENTED SEPT. 17TH, 1858". SN 17012. CONDITION: Bore is very good. Metal surfaces appear refinished overall. Bbl retains 80% plumb/blue refinish. Frame and lock retain 50% plus recase color, as does hammer. No cartouche in wood visible, though various metal parts have inspector s initials. MODEL 1860 SPENCER CARBINE. SN 15747. 20-1/4" bbl. Top of bbl flat is marked "SPENCER REPEATING RIFLE Co. BOSTON MASS, PAT D MARCH 6, 1860". CONDITION: Metal surfaces cleaned and refinished with spattered varnish or shellac covering these surfaces. Bore is very good. Wood sanded, refinished. No inspector s cartouche is discernible. MODEL 1865 SPENCER CONTRACT MODEL CARBINE. Cal. 50. SN 22306. One of approximately 30,502 made for government contract, of which about half were fitted with Stabler cut off, which this one has. It is a standard carbine with 20" rnd bbl, square base front sight and 900-yard ladder rear sight. It has the Burnside markings on top of the receiver with "J.L.C." inspector initials on the left flat and an oval "ESA" cartouche on the left wrist. CONDITION: Very good to fine. Metal being a smooth silver/gray patina, the receiver & lockplate having traces of silver casehardening. Wood is sound with light handling & use nicks & scratches on the stock with nicks, dings & bruises on the forearm. PRESENTATION SPENCER MODEL 1865 SPORTING RIFLE. Cal. 50. NSN. 26" rnd bbl. Has deluxe wood with pewter forearm tip, sling swivels and a tang sight. Standard three line marking above the receiver. "M. 1865" parallel to the bore on top of the bbl. A silver presentation plaque is set into the right side of the stock "PRESENTED BY / Honorable John Rose. / TO THE / Frontier Rifle Association. / COMPANY CHALLENGE MATCH. / Volley firing FirstPrize Five Rounds / Score 142 / WON BY / NO. 6. CompY. 51St Battn Serg Proper". "PCM" is stamped on the bbl ahead of the rear sight. CONDITION: 90% thinning blue on the bbl. Sling ring is missing. Standard features with markings removed from bbl during conversion. Primer mechanism parts are missing. Buttplate is cut for a patchbox but the stock does not have one. SMITH CIVIL WAR CARBINE. Cal. 50. SN 21049. Mass Arms manufactured carbine with 21-xxx/xxx" oct to rnd bbl, German silver front sight blade and small carbine ladder rear sight. It has inspector initials on the left side flat of the bbl and two visible cartouches on the left wrist. It has nicely figured American walnut buttstock with smooth carbine buttplate and a rnd forearm with sgl band. There is a sling bar & ring on the left side of the receiver. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl retains 93-95% strong bright orig blue with a few scattered spots of light surface rust. Receiver retains 60-70% fading case colors, the trigger guard is a gray metal color. SHARPS & HANKINS NAVY CARBINE. Cal. 52. SN 9139. 24" rnd bbl. Standard Sharps markings on both sides of the action. There is an anchor on the leather covering at the top rear of the bbl, and "P/ WCW" inspector marks on the left side of the frame behind the Sharps patent marking. CONDITION: Gray patina with light pitting on the action the leather with about an 1" of the tail missing under the forearm. Receiver has a sling bar & ring on the left side. Stock is straight grain American walnut with straight grip & squared carbine buttplate. It has two legible cartouches on the left side of the wrist. CONDITION: Good to very good. Bbl retains about 75% strong orig blue with some light surface pitting & discoloration. Receiver has traces of orig case colors with the balance turned silver with some mottled patina. Stock is sound with usual nicks, dings & scratches and a coating of old finish. MAYNARD FIRST MODEL SPORTING RIFLE. Cal. 50. 20" part oct. bbl. Tang sight integral with the upper receiver tang. Paper patent tag inside of patch box is different from those engraved on the outside of the patch box. CONDITION: Considerable blue on the front of the bbl, but the back end has been cleaned, leaving light to moderate pitting and being touched up with cold blue. Frame has the same gray patina as the rear of the bbl. Hammer and tang sight have orig bright blue. Buttplate and patch box have moderate surface rust with 25% blue overall. SPENCER MODEL 1865 CARBINE W/COLORADO TERRITORY MARKS. Cal. 50 Spencer. SN 25442. Usual configuration with Stabler cut-off, 20" 3-groove rnd bbl. It has standard Burnside Rifle Co. marks on top of the receiver and a "GC" cartouche is legible on the left side of the wrist; the other is not. Left side of the buttstock is stamped "U.S. / COL.TER" and someone has carved the outline of a mountain lion on the right side of the stock. This carbine is one of a shipment of 1,000 firearms received by the State of Colorado in 1868, along with 100,000 rds of ammunition. Firearms were about equally divided between rifles & carbines. Very few of these marked items have ever been encountered. CONDITION: Fine. Overall dark brown patina on the bbl with a couple of spots of light surface rust and pitting. There is a filled area behind the sling swivel on the forearm with usual nicks, dings & scratches on the wood overall, otherwise the wood is sound & retains a fine hand worn patina. ENGRAVED SHARPS MODEL 1853 SPORTING RIFLE. SN 8319. Cal. 40. 25-xxx/xxx" oct bbl. This is an "extra engraved" rifle of which only a handful were made. It features full coverage engraving on the frame, lockplate and patchbox, with vignettes of a running deer on the patchbox and feeding doe on the left side of the frame. Bbl has partial engraving for about 4" at the rear and 1-xxx/xxx" at the front. Lever is engraved only on the bottom and the buttplate on the tang, and around the lower screw. Standard markings on the bbl, lockplate and receiver. Rear sight staff is broken. Dbl set triggers. CONDITION: Smooth gray patina overall, with light pitting on the tangs, lever and buttplate. Fine heavy rifle with 30-xxx/xxx" oct bbl, 1-xxx/xxx" at the muzzle with German silver Rocky Mountain front sight, 800 yard Lawrence Patent ladder rear sight with Sharps Bridgeport & "OLD RELIABLE" markings on the top flat. It has dbl set triggers & its orig military carbine stock with steel buttplate. It has a Meacham schnable tip forearm with two screws. Weight: . CONDITION: Very good to fine. Bbl retains a dark mottled brown patina with a few small spots of crusty rust and a light ding or two. Receiver & lockplate retain a mottled silver/brown patina with traces of case colors under the hammer & in the very sheltered areas. Wood is sound with the stock retaining most of an old restored finish & the forearm a fine orig hand worn patina. Mechanics are fine. Trigger adjusting screw is missing. Strong bright bore with light to moderate pitting. Fine sporting rifle with 26" oct to rnd bbl, gold wash Beech's combination front sight, 2-position flip rear sight and an elevating mid-range tang sight. Stock is very highly figured American walnut with straight grip & square semi-crescent buttplate. Entire rifle has a coating of old dried oil or wax. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl retains 97-98% strong bright orig blue. Receiver retains about 50% faded case colors with the balance a mottled silver/brown. Stock is sound with minor nicks & scratches and retains most of its bright orig varnish. Mechanics are fine, strong bright bore with light to moderate pitting just in front of the chamber. HOLDEN OPEN FRAME SGL SHOT RIFLE. Cal. 44 RF Henry. SN 39. Standard grade rifle with rare iron frame (usually found with bronze frames), 24" oct bbl, orig unusual Holden front sight and carbine style ladder rear sight. It has the rare feature of a complete open-sided frame with two unusual finger loops exposed, one to cock the hammer after the lever is open and the front one to extract the empty cartridge for reloading, which also serves as the breech block. Wood is nicely figured straight grain American walnut, uncheckered, with rounded forearm & straight stock with crescent buttplate. Entire rifle is coated with old dried wax or oil. CONDITION: Very good. All the iron retains most of an old refinish being a plummy/brown color. There are a couple of dings on the receiver and other light handling & use marks. Stock has a replaced sliver on the bottom of the wrist, otherwise the wood is sound with usual light nicks, dings & scratches and some dark oil staining around the receiver edges. SCARCE ENFIELD SNIDER CONVERSION CARBINE. Cal. 57 SN 4391. Converted rifle with 25-xxx/xxx" bbl, barleycorn front sight and reverse mounted ladder rear sight. It is mounted in a 1-pc walnut stock with two bands and slotted head wiping rod. It has a brass buttplate with the number "327" on the tang and has the Enfield cartouche on the right side near the buttplate. Lockplate has usual markings with the date "1867". CONDITION: Very good to fine. Bbl retains about 70% strong orig blue with a couple of large patches of light surface rust. Stock is sound showing moderate to heavy wear and retains most of a fine dark patina. CEREMONIAL MOCCASINS, SIOUX, CIRCA 1880 S. During the last two decades of the 19th century, the Lakota (Western Sioux) arts entered a baroque stage. Entire surfaces of clothing and objects were decorated with beadwork including the soles of some moccasins. Although such moccasins are popularly called "burial moccasins," numerous historic photographs illustrate people wearing moccasins with the soles beaded. Likewise, surviving examples exhibit wear on the beadwork of the soles. CONDITION: Hide somewhat stiff; one inch tear in hide at tongue of right moccasin, four missing rows of beads on right moccasin near perimeter. MOCCASINS, SIOUX, LATE 19TH CENTURY. Native tanned cowhide, rawhide soles, fully beaded uppers with long tapering tongue; beaded in classic Sioux style border designs representing tip is and possibly meat drying racks. CONDITION: At some point the instep area of both was slit for three inches toward the toes, and a row of beads removed for someone to be able to wear this pair. Note that the beaded tongue would essentially cover these breaks when worn. Deep scoring of the soles probably increased the flexibility and / or traction. Note small spot of transparent glue on upper rows of beadwork on outer side of left moccasin - possibly to stabilize broken stitches; half inch tear in side of left moccasin at base of tongue. BLANKET STRIP, SIOUX, 19TH CENTURY. Classic Sioux example, beaded on native tanned cowhide, to adorn a man s or woman s wearing blanket. "Cross" motif in each rosette probably represents the Morning Star. Thong pendent with brass beads and a sgl, one inch hair pipe suspended from the middle of one rosette-like pendants, assumed to have been originally suspended from the others. BLANKET STRIP, SIOUX, CIRCA 1870 S. Beaded with sinew in the "lane stitch" technique on buffalo hide, with classic Lakota motifs and color pallet. The white background is somewhat unusual for Sioux beadwork of the period, but is occasionally seen. Blanket strips are elaborate ornaments applied across the middle of tanned skin robes and wearing blankets. CONDITION: One ½" and one 1" long tears; four nail holes in one end of the hide; approximately five individual rows of beads missing. RARE INDIAN MADE HORSE MASK, LATE 19TH CENTURY, AND VOLUME 74, APRIL 1999, NUMBER 2 NEW MEXICO HISTORICAL REVIEW. 1) Made of two pcs of tanned buffalo robe; top section having longer hair to suggest a buffalo s forelock. A pair of cow buffalo horns tufted with red down feathers attached appropriately at the temples. Eyeholes, bases of horns, forelock margin and outline of mask bordered with short buckskin fringes. Northern Plains and Plateau Indian peoples utilized imposing horse masks for ceremonial purposes and horse parades. A rare few, such as this example, represented buffalo, and when pressed into use imparted buffalo power to a warrior s mount. Mask mounted in wooden packing case covered with paper, and printed on back, "CHIEF THUNDERBIRD/FRED HARVEY/INDIAN BUILDING/ALBUQUERQUE/NEW MEXICO". As per owner, "according to Moon s family, Moon acquired this from his friend Chief Thunderbird and is of Cheyenne origin". Driebe 1997, pg 424. Size: Mask 18-1/2" long, horn tip to horn tip 15-1/2". INDIAN DECORATED MODIFIED SPRINGFIELD TRAPDOOR POSSIBLY CONNECTED TO GERONIMO. Bored out to 20 ga. Serial number is defaced. Bbl cut to 22". Stock has been stamped with a punch design of various figures, which owner states are Gan symbols used by Geronimo. There are numbers of brass tacks stamped into the stock at various places. Cartouches are also stamped. There are four filed grooves on each side of the forearm. These grooves are similar to the four grooves filed on each edge of bow in lot #3548.. The "Gan symbols" also are similar to the symbols on the knife handle of lot #3545. This is accompanied by a canvas belt with large brass tacks, with loops for 20 ga. cartridges. A much later Army coat button is riveted to the tongue. Rear sight has been removed and various parts replaced. Some paperwork accompanies this lot about Indian modified guns, also comparing symbols on gun to Geronimo used Gan symbols. According to historian Grenville Goodwin, Army Scout John Robe tells about how Gen George Crook tried to contact Geronimo by taking his gun to shoot birds near where the Apache were camped. The hostile leaders confronted him, "grabbed his gun away and took the birds he had shot". Moon tells this to be the same gun. INDIAN DECORATED SMITH & WESSON REVOLVER WITH SUPPOSED CONNECTION TO GERONIMO. Cal. 44. Serial number not visible. This is an American Model revolver, covered by rawhide on the grip with 4-xxx/xxx" ribbed bbl. Grips are covered about 80% with red & green painted rawhide, which is sewn on the bottom & the front strap & heavily tacked on the sides & bottom. It is accompanied by a rough hand-made belt & holster. Belt loops have been changed with lighter colored leather loops. This revolver is supposed to have belonged to Geronimo according to the consignor but there is nothing to confirm that. CONDITION: About half of the nickel remains on the bbl. Moderate rust & pitting on the sideplate. Leather covering on the grips is worn through about half way on the bottom, with some cuts on the backstrap. Mechanically needs adjustment. Riveted wood handle, with dot stamped figures, purported to be Gan symbols used by Geronimo, and similar to the Gan symbols on the stock of Springfield trapdoor (lot 3543) Heavy black leather scabbard is riveted at the tip & has stapled tack decorations. PRESENTATION RIO GRANDE CAMP KNIFE TO SUPT. A. NORTON. 7" blade, 1-5/8" wide is etched on one side "RIO GRAND CAMP KNIFE" above a vine and leaves. The other side is etched "A. NORTON / NEW MEXICO SUPT. / OF INDIAN AFFAIRS". Guard is two heavy pcs of brass riveted to the blade. Scales are horn also riveted to the blade tang. This knife is pictured on a page 351 of Driebe s book on Carl Moon s possessions. CONDITION: Very even gray patina overall with light scattered pitting. Cross guard has a dark patina with bright rivets. INDIAN USED SHEFFIELD #6 KNIFE. 7" semi-spear pointed sgl edge blade. Copper crossguards are probably replacements, throat & pommel are German silver, crossguard should have matched. INDIAN MODE TACKED BELT. Of harness leather decorated with two-pronged brass brads arranged in a four-pointed star, a diamond, and concentric circles motifs. Small pouch of commercial tanned leather sewn inside; dbl buckle fastener. Women of the Jicarilla and Ute tribes in particular, and occasionally of some Plains groups, wore exceptionally wide leather belts decorated with brass tacks, studs, or brads. INDIAN MADE LOT OF TWO ITEMS: BOWCASE AND QUIVER WITH BOW, SOUTHERN PLAINS, LATE 19TH CENTURY. Owner states that this is 1880 s and according to Moon s family had come from Geronimo and the Apache. 1) Constructed of commercial leather, decorated with bands and panels of red wool felt; the narrow triangular pendent from the opening of each the quiver and bow case hung with pairs of long metal cones. Size: Bow case 30-1/2" long x 3-1/2" wide, quiver 26-3/4" long x 5-1/2" wide. CONDITION: General surface soiling, no apparent damage. 2) Bow of ash, recurved style, sinew-backed. Linear designs applied with pyrography ("woodburning") to outer surface of semi-spherical gourd base; thin rawhide drum head secured with three pegs (one missing), and one ring peg for suspension. INDIAN MADE SHIELD AND COVER, PLAINS, LATE 19th C. 1) Indian made shield with rawhide disc bound by a bent wood hoop, and wooden grip both wrapped with rawhide thongs. Carrying strap attached across back. Front of shield decorated with two handprints in red paint. Stamped on top back "Miller Bros/101 Ranch". CONDITION: No apparent damage and usual surface soiling. SIZE: Diameter is 16-1/4". 2) Shield cover consists of two pieces of tanned hide laced together with one orig patch at lower left margin. Large thunderbird-like image painted in black in center, encircled by sgl, narrow black and red bands near perimeter. Five turkey vulture, secondary wing feathers are suspended along bottom margin. WOMAN S MOCCASINS, PUEBLO, CIRCA 1900. Native tanned elk hide uppers, rawhide soles. All of the Southwestern Pueblo tribes made this genre of "high-top" moccasins for women. Style incorporates a legging-like extension that wraps around the wearer s leg below the knee; the top folds down in the manner of a tunic skirt. Note the "stake loops" (left from the tanning process) around the bottom margin. PLAINS BUFFALO BULL SKULL. Owner states that the Moon family represented this to have belonged to Chief Thunderbird Ca. 1880. Painted in a manner for ceremonies such as for the Sun Dance. Owner states that the overall pattern of green dots represents hail stones that call upon the might of the Thunderbirds  the most powerful beings in the universe. LATE 19TH CENTURY SIOUX FLUTE WITH PAINTED PARFLECHE CASE AND PHOTOGRAPH. 1) Flute: Indian made of split and hollowed cedar bound with three bands of sinew; red and white ribbon streamers and painted stop carved with buffalo head in low relief. Series of red & black triangles painted around opening. Plains Indian men customarily played flutes of this type for courting and general musical entertainment. This flute is being played by Geronimo Gomez in the photograph entitled Love Song, at Taos, New Mexico-1914 [Driebe, 1997: 83]. Size: 22-1/4" long. CONDITION: No apparent breakage or damage. 2) Case parfleche (Indian-prepared rawhide) painted in classic Sioux designs and colors applied to parfleche containers of various types.
