16. Jules Desire Lubin (French, b. 1854) "The
Trespasser". Oil on canvas, ca. 1883, signed in the lower right corner,

54-1/2" x 71-1/2". There is a large red wax seal on the center
stretcher. An interesting narrative in an interior at an impasse in an
incident. Two officials appear to be about to arrest the man at the left
surrounded by other figures. The dog at the lower center provides an
additional dramatic feature as it snarls at the officials. The faces and
postures of the men are particularly well painted. The frame has an old
nameplate at the center stating the artist, title and that the painting

165. Paul Bough Travis (American, Cleveland School,
1891-1975) An African Landscape. Watercolor on pebbleboard, signed and
inscribed in the lower right "To Shep and Opal...Paul B. Travis...1955),
18-3/4" x 26-1/4", framed in a light wood frame, overall size 25" x
32-1/2". This fluid and colorful scene is a fine example of the artist's
preoccupation with Africa. Please note the man with a pith helmet in the
vegetation at the far right, and the menacing alligator cruising for
prey in the pond. There is a framer's label on the back of the remaining
dust cover from a gallery in Colorado, indicating that the painting has
done some travelling of its own before returning here to Cleveland.

54. Laszlo Neogrady (Hungarian, 1896-1962) A
photo-realistic painting of an evening winter with stream. Oil on

37". Laszlo Neogrady was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1896. He was the
son of the artist Anatal Neogrady and he studied painting at the

Laszlo Neogrady exhibited his work at the Hungarian Art Gallery. He
specialised in painting naturalistic landscapes many of which depicted
forest scenes in the snow. These works are highly sought after and can

Father Train Timotei Tohaneanu, born in Romania, a monk and a priest at
the Brancoveanu Monstery, was self-taught on painting on glass for over
25 years, mixing for colors from Romanian soil. Among his many duties at
the Monastery he taught the young monks the art of painting ions on
glass and native scenes, more of the Transylvanian scenic arts and
crafts. These crafts have been done in the past centuries and forgotten
for over 70 years, until he brought back the art to life in all its form

drawn to reveal the landscape. Board has been painted along the edges to

this painting is dated 1977. Sklarski is well known for her trompe

213. Charles Ephraim Burchfield (American, 1897-1967)
Untitled. Black ink on paper, possibly over a lithograhic background,
initialed "CEB" on the lower left corner. A very strong image for a
wallpaper design, with foliage and coiled snakes in an underwater
setting. Image size approx. 19" x 13-1/2", framed overall approx. 28" x
20-1/2". Born in Ashtabula Harbor, Ohio, Charles Burchfield became known
as a regionalist painter of middle-western America. His paintings have
had much influence on succeeding generations of artists. In 1912, he
enrolled in the Cleveland School of Art where his most influential
teacher was Henry G. Keller. Another major Ohio influence on his
painting was William Sommer, leader of the modernist movement in the
Cleveland area. He served in World War I from 1918 to 1919 and in 1921,
lived in a small town south of Cleveland, moved to Buffalo, New York
where until 1929, he worked as a wallpaper designer for the M.H. Birge

285. Ellsworth Kelly (American, born 1923) "Blue, Yellow,
Red." Color silkscreen, signed "Kelly" on the lower right corner,
numbered 51/100, in a gold metal frame, image size approx. 18" x
17-1/2", framed overall approx. 26" x 25-1/2". Three horizontal stripes
of blue, yellow, and red. An important American minimalist painter and
sculptor, Ellsworth Kelly explains, "By removing the content from my
work I shifted the visual reality of painting to include the space
around it." Kelly was born May 31, 1923 in Newburgh, New York. He
studied at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, from 1941 to 1943. After military
service from 1943 to 1945, he attended the School of the Museum of Fine
Arts, Boston, from 1946 to 1947. Kelly studied art in Paris from 1948 to
1954, when postwar Paris was the home of European Abstraction and the
avant-garde. He has executed many public commissions, including a mural
for UNESCO in Paris in 1969, sculpture for the city of Barcelona in
1978, and a memorial for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum,
Washington, D.C., in 1993. Kelly's extensive work has been recognized in
numerous retrospective exhibitions, including a sculpture exhibition at
the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, in 1982; an exhibition of
works on paper and a show of his print works that traveled extensively
in the United States and Canada from 198788; and a career retrospective
in 1996 organized by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, which
traveled to the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Tate
Gallery, London; and the Haus der Kunst, Munich. Kelly lives in

decorative 19th century footed coal scuttle, apprx 15" wide, 19" deep,
18" tall to the top of the handle. Probably made of tin, formed,
painted, and hand decorated; with a cast iron handle at the top with
oak-leaf and acorn motif. The front of the hinged lid is decorated with
a painting of a blond young girl daydreaming in a landscape, holding a
flower. A two-handled jug is set before her, and a landscape with lake
and a clouded sky in the distance. The body of the scuttle is painted
black, and at one time was embellished with gilt designs which are
almost worn off. There is a space at the back of the scuttle where a
brush once was held. There is a handled metal insert in the interior

scene depicts a rustic farm with a small cottage off to the left side
and cows in the distance. Two small figures appear to be engaged in
their daily chores. Painting style is precise and detailed. Verso has
red and white Cleveland Museum Registrar's tag with a number of TR
12426/14. The record shows that the painting came into the museum in
March of 1960 from the estate of Charles W. Williams and left in June of

39. Preliminary Painting for Aubusson Tapestry, French,
19th Century Hunting scene depicts a small dog nabbing a duck. The
animals are in a marsh-like setting with long reed leaves. The vignette
is surrounded by an elaborate boarder of garlands and scrolling foliate
shapes. This type of painting was used a guide for the creation of the
Aubusson tapestries, much as a painter follows a cartoon. Originally the
tapestries were hung from walls, however they were later used as floor
